Why nine sessions?

The popular idea that habits form in 21 days is a myth — one that originated from a plastic surgeon observing patients adjust to new appearances, not from any study of behaviour change. The actual research tells a different story.

Phillippa Lally's study at University College London found that habit formation takes anywhere from 18 to 254 days, with an average of 66. What matters is not the number of days but the quality of repetition — returning to the same practice with genuine attention, across enough time for new neural pathways to consolidate.

Nine sessions per stage gives you enough repetition for something to settle, without so many sessions that it becomes a task. It is a rhythm, not a rule.

And because you know yourself best — some people feel ready to move forward before nine sessions. Others need more time and want to stay longer. Nine is a suggestion, not a finish line. The app will follow your lead either way.

What art and imagination
do differently.

Researchers have found that people who focus well aren't people who never get distracted. They're people who return faster.

A pre-performance ritual, a tennis player's bounce before serving, a basketball player's free throw routine, lasts seconds. It anchors attention at the start. Then the performer is on their own.

Art practice is different. It is an anchor that lasts the entire duration.

The physical sequence of picking up a brush, touching water, watching colour move keeps returning attention continuously. And because the medium is unpredictable, you cannot drift for long before the material itself calls you back.

Not one anchor. An unbroken chain of micro-returns.

Mihaly Csikszentmihályi, who developed flow theory by studying artists, found that unpredictable creative materials produce sustained, effortless attention, the kind that cannot be forced or willed into existence. Artists got so absorbed in their work they would forget to eat, sleep, rest. Not because they were disciplined. Because the material kept asking them to return.

This is why The Present Project uses art and imagination as its primary vehicles, not because they are relaxing, but because unpredictable materials and inner imagery create the conditions for presence again and again, without willpower or effort.
